About Dreamhost:
Like Visitbloomsburg, Dreamhost was founded by a group of college students. For its most basic plan-shared hosting, Dreamhost offers unlimited disk storage, bandwidth, domains hosted, full Shell/SSH/FTP/SFTP users, email accounts, mySQL 5 databases, and uses Debian Linux as its Operating System. Other than web hosting service, Dreamhost also offer domains registrar, cloud and servers packages.
When comparing the plans offered by these two webhosts, it is relative easy to tell that Visitbloomsburg is a much cheaper option. While the price also varies depending on the term that you select, overall Visitbloomsburg provides a much more attractive package than Dreamhost. Another big difference is that Dreamhost uses its own custom control panel. This can be frustrated for some people when they switch from cPanel – an industry standard. On the other hand, Visitbloomsburg has cPanel as its control panel and there are good reasons for it. Another downside with Dreamhost is that they don’t offer take calls when you need supports. They have pretty well documented Wiki, forum and blog, however, sometimes it would be nice to talk to a person when urgent problems arise. They do have limited amount of ‘call-backs’ per month for each account. However, this is definitely not the best support out there.
There are also frequent security incidents with Dreamhost in the past couple years.
- In July, 2006, two power outages in the building housing DreamHost’s datacenter caused significant disruption to services offered by DreamHost
- A year later, approximately 700 websites and 3,500 FTP accounts hosted on DreamHost’s servers were compromised.
- The following January, DreamHost accidentally billed some customers for an extra year’s worth of services, which they initially reported as $7.5 million in extra charges.
- On May 20, 2019, dreamhost.com was down for 6 hours after a DDos attack against them and the website DrawMuhammadDay.com they hosted.
- On January 20, 2019, one of DreamHost’s database servers was illegally accessed and some customers’ FTP and shell access passwords may have been compromised.
Conclusion:
Dreamhost seems like a decent webhosting provider, however, Visitbloomsburg’s definitely a better alternative.
